An intimation under Section 143(1) is an automated communication sent to your registered email after your tax return is processed. For many taxpayers, seeing this notice triggers immediate panic. However, in most cases, it is simply a confirmation that your tax return matched the department's records. Let's look at how to handle this notice if there is an outstanding demand.

How to Read a Section 143(1) Intimation

The notice displays two columns:

  • As provided by taxpayer: The figures you declared in your ITR.
  • As computed under Section 143(1): The figures calculated by the tax department's system.
If the difference results in a tax demand, you will see a calculation showing how much tax you owe.

How to Submit an Online Response

If you disagree with the outstanding demand, do not ignore it. You have a 30-day window to respond:

  1. Log into the e-filing portal and go to the Pending Actions menu.
  2. Click on Response to Outstanding Demand.
  3. Choose Disagree with Demand.
  4. Select the specific reason for your disagreement (e.g., mismatch in TDS, double reporting, incorrect income calculation).
  5. Upload supporting documents (like your Form 16, bank statements, or TDS certificates) and submit the response for manual review by a tax officer.
