Significant Exemptions for Salaried Taxpayers Under New Income Tax Rules 2026

Effective from April 1, 2026, the new Income Tax Act 2025 and Income Tax Rules 2026 will replace the erstwhile Income Tax Act 1961 and Rules 1962. This transition brings forth several important benefits and enhanced exemptions specifically tailored for the salaried class of taxpayers.

Key Changes and Enhanced Exemptions:

  • Tax Year Concept: The traditional concepts of 'Previous Year' and 'Assessment Year' have been replaced by a unified 'Tax Year'. This means income will be earned and taxes paid within the same tax year, simplifying the nomenclature.
  • Children Education Allowance: The exemption limit for Children Education Allowance has been significantly increased by 30 times, rising from ₹100 per month per child to ₹3,000 per month per child.
  • Hostel Expenditure Allowance: Similarly, the exemption for Hostel Expenditure Allowance sees a 30-fold increase, moving from ₹300 per month per child to ₹9,000 per month per child.
  • Meal Coupons/Vouchers: The tax-exempt limit for meal coupons or vouchers has been updated from ₹50 per meal to ₹200 per meal.
  • Corporate Gifts: The exemption for corporate gifts has been raised from ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 in a financial year.
  • Commutation Allowances: Allowances provided for home-to-office commutation will now be treated as exempt perquisites.
  • Medical Loans from Employer: Medical loans provided by an employer to an employee, previously exempt up to ₹0, will now be tax-free up to ₹2 lakh.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) Benefit: The benefit of 50% of salary for HRA, previously limited to Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai, has been extended to four additional major cities: Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Pune.

These substantial revisions in the Income Tax Rules 2026 are designed to provide considerable relief and increased savings opportunities for salaried taxpayers across the country.
