Significant Delays in Income Tax Refunds for FY 2025-26

Taxpayers are experiencing considerable delays in receiving their income tax refunds for the Financial Year 2025-26, with official data indicating a substantial backlog. As of March 24, 2026, over 27 lakh verified income tax returns (ITRs) are yet to be processed by the Income Tax Department. This unprocessed volume directly impacts the timelines for refunds for a large number of taxpayers across the country.

The delays, which have become a frequent topic of discussion among taxpayers, are attributed to more than just administrative hurdles. Experts point to system-driven and data-driven cross-verification processes implemented at the Central Processing Centre (CPC) as the primary cause. The government maintains that the current system is designed to enhance accuracy, transparency, and prevent fraud.

Reasons Behind the Prolonged Delays

  • Automated Processing: Returns are processed through highly automated systems at the CPC.
  • Data Cross-Verification: Crucially, data submitted in ITRs is cross-verified against multiple sources such as the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), and Form 26AS.
  • Mismatched Data: Cases where mismatches are identified are flagged for additional validation, which can significantly extend the processing time compared to instant processing.

The tax department emphasizes that refunds are now issued only after thorough system-level validation, moving beyond a simple filing-based issuance. This stringent process, while aimed at ensuring accuracy and preventing fraudulent claims, is concurrently contributing to the extended waiting periods for many taxpayers awaiting their refunds.
