Diwali Bonus or Gift Voucher: What's Taxable in 2026?

A Diwali bonus announcement can make your festive shopping budget look bigger overnight. Before spending it, check what your employer is actually offering: extra salary, a gift hamper, or a shopping voucher. The label on the announcement is only the starting point; the payment method and payroll treatment matter.

This guide focuses on benefits from your employer. Gifts from relatives, gifts to customers and an employer's business-expense deductions need separate analysis.

Cash bonus and gift voucher: the basic difference

A cash bonus forms part of taxable salary. Calling it a Diwali gift does not create a special bonus exemption. The Income Tax Department's salary guidance also distinguishes cash gifts and gifts convertible into money from gifts in kind. For a voucher, check whether it can be exchanged for cash before assuming it qualifies for gift treatment. Source: departmental salary guide; cash-gift guidance.

Taxable income is not the same as tax payable. Your final liability depends on your total income, applicable regime, deductions and rebates. A bonus does not have one universal tax rate, so a colleague's take-home amount is not a reliable estimate of yours.

The 2026 gift rule: read the boundary carefully

The notified Income-tax Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 April 2026. Under Rule 15's gift entry, qualifying employer gifts, vouchers or tokens received by an employee or household member have nil taxable value only when their aggregate for the tax year is below ₹15,000. At ₹15,000 or more, the full value is taxable, not merely the excess. Source: Notification 22/2026, PDF page 14, gift entry 4.

The department's older salary guides still describe the previous ₹5,000 rule. Use those pages for the cash-versus-kind distinction, and the notified 2026 rules for the current gift threshold.

Two illustrative payroll situations

Meera's bonus: Meera's employer announces a ₹20,000 cash bonus. That amount enters her salary calculation. To estimate what she can spend, she should ask payroll for the revised tax computation and expected bank credit. Multiplying the bonus by a guessed tax percentage could produce a misleading answer.

Arjun's vouchers: Arjun receives a ₹10,000 qualifying voucher after an earlier ₹5,000 employer gift in the same tax year. His aggregate is ₹15,000, so the nil-value condition fails and the full ₹15,000 is taxable. These are fictional examples, not calculations of either person's final tax bill.

What to ask HR before choosing a benefit

  • What exactly will I receive? Request the benefit policy or voucher terms. Check the issuer, permitted stores, expiry date and whether cash redemption is possible.
  • What has already been recorded? Ask payroll for a list of gifts attributed to you, including anything sent directly to your household. Compare it with your emails and benefit statements.
  • How will it appear in payroll? Request the value used in the salary computation and any expected adjustment to tax withholding. Resolve unclear entries while the details are easy to retrieve.
  • Is the voucher useful to me? A benefit restricted to shops you never use may be less practical than it first appears. Compare usability and expiry conditions as well as tax treatment.

Keep the employer's announcement, voucher confirmation and payroll explanation together. A small folder is enough; you do not need a complicated spreadsheet to remember which benefit arrived and when.

A practical check for employers

Before sending the festive announcement, have payroll review its wording. State whether the amount is a gross bonus or a benefit value, and explain where employees can ask about their personal computation. Avoid presenting a quoted benefit amount as a guaranteed bank credit.

Maintain an employee-wise register with the issue date, description, value and supporting invoice or voucher record. Reconcile HR's distribution list with payroll rather than relying on the marketing name of a rewards programme. Where benefit terms are unclear, ask the issuer for written clarification before promising a tax outcome.
